The Secretary of Defense, Robert M. Gates, personally presented the Joint Meritorious Unit Award to TRANSCOM. The audience included General Petraeus and General McNabb amongst other distinguished guests.
Secretary Gates commented on TRANSCOM’s accomplishments including the support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. TRANSCOM has evacuated more than 25,000 wounded troops, delivered over 5 billion gallons of fuel and delivered over 8.5 million short tons of cargo amongst many other accomplishments.
TRANSCOM's support of the Afghanistan campaign includes moving supplies through the Northern Distribution Network, a complex effort that involves working with the State Department and two other CoComs. Some 10,000 containers have moved and are moving through Central Asia and the Caucasus into the Afghan theater.
TRANSCOM's lifesaving work extends beyond the battlefield. Less than two weeks after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, TRANSCOM deployed over 6,000 personnel to the area and evacuated over 10,000 Haitians from the island. Over the subsequent weeks, Air Mobility Command, Surface Distribution and Deployment Command, and Military Sealift Command assets provided more than 400,000 tons of cargo, 2.5 million meals and 5 million liters of water.
